Re-Do Wooden Box

I bought this cute wooden box at a yard sale, for a dollar or two. I thought I could re-do it for my son, he could use it as a place to keep his keys, wallet, cell phone etc. Only one side was painted, the rest bare wood.

We live in Oklahoma and my son is an Oklahoma State Cowboy fan, so that was my theme.  I took off the handle and will use it on something else. I gave it a good sanding inside and out. I painted the inside OSU orange and the outside black. I had wanted to play around with crackle paint and this seemed to be the perfect project. I used white paint that crackled showing the black underneath. 

 It was a lot of fun to do and I like the results.

My daughter found the Pistol Pete drawer pulls on sale, it gives him a place to hang things. The legs are wooden candle holders I had bought at Hobby Lobby years ago. I painted them black and used screws to hold them in place. Before I added the drawer pulls I used a spray sealer inside and out.

Personalized Dinosaur Shirt

I first made this for my son many years ago, during the period when he loved dinosaurs. Even though my grandson is too young to like dinosaurs, I thought it would make a cute onesie. His name is Ollie so this dinosaur became an Ollieosaurus my son's name is Noah so his was Noahosaurus. You get the idea.
Of course any name and any dinosaur can be used.

First wash and dry your garment and don't use a dryer sheet.
I  went online and copied a simple dinosaur pattern. I reduced it to the right size for my onesie, placed it underneath the front and used a pencil to copy it.

Place freezer paper between your layers, so your paint does not bleed thru.

I used acrylic paints but add a textile medium, this makes your paint permanent on fabric.

What is great about this project is you can use any style dinosaur, any color shirt or paints. When my grandson gets older I plan on making this again  but use a t-shirt and make him shorts from dinosaur material.

Fun with Dick and Jane Nursery

We became grandparents last year for the first time!  We wanted a special place where our grandson and future grandchildren could feel comfortable and have their own space. It needed to be a neutral theme, one that would work for either a boy or a girl. Fun with Dick and Jane seemed to be a perfect choice, I love the colors, and it would be sex neutral.

 I had  bought some material several years ago at a quilting store, long before I was going to be a grandma. So I was ready to start sewing and crafting!

I have had this old, red chenille bedspread forever.
I knew one day I would come up with a good use for it! I used it for the crib skirt and backing for a quilt.

 The crib we had used with our children was in good condition and stored in the attic. So we put it together and  gave it a good cleaning. We purchased the same mattress that our grandson had at home.  

I made a simple quilt, using solid blue and yellow and Fun with Dick and Jane squares. I cut the  backing from the middle of  my bedspread, which left me with narrow strips. These were perfect to use as the bed skirt. I hand-tied the quilt instead having it quilted, to me it looks more retro. If you look at the bottom of the picture you can see a white and yellow trimmed afghan I crocheted. At the top of the picture is a pillow I made using a different material.

I used denim for the bottom of the bed skirt.
I cut the denim to fit and cut four strips of the chenille for each side.

It is exactly the look I wanted.

I had a used bummer pad that I covered with a red and blue striped material.

I wanted simple wall decorations. I made these by using thin artist canvas panels, material, modge podge and
rick rack. I love using these canvas panels, they are inexpensive and if you don't like something just paint back over them.

 I first painted the canvas red, cut the material with a little bit of an over hang and enough to miter the corners. To seal it I used two coats of Modge Podge. I measured and made marks so each of my holes would be uniform and used an ice pick to make the holes.
 Red and while polka dot rick rack is used to hang my wall art.

I also made subway art, again using artist canvas panels. I made  stencils using my Cricut, painted, sprayed it with a sealer and glued a picture hanger on the back.
 I even found a Fun with Dick and Jane calendar at Hobby Lobby.

I had so much fun crafting this special project and look forward to our grandson's visits and
hopefully more grandchildren!

Painting on Burlap

I wanted to try painting on burlap for a long time and finally got around to it. It was easier than I thought and
a lot fun.

I buy the thin artist canvas panels from Hobby Lobby when they are on sale or I have a coupon. I used brown burlap but it comes in other colors that could be used. The possibilities are endless. This one is 8x10 but any size could be used.

Using my glue gun I mitered the corners and glued the burlap to the back of my canvas.

I used my Cricut to cut out a design and then traced around it with a pencil. A sharpie would have been easier to see but, I was afraid I would make a mistake.  So I ended up winging it some on the painting. I  printed off lettering from my computer and tried using carbon paper onto the burlap, that didn't work. So I cut around the letters and traced them too.  I have found children's coloring books to have great pictures that can be traced and copied. They are usually a simple design which is easier for tracing. I use Apple Barrel paints and lightly spray it with a clear matte aerosol sealer.

Here is another one I recently made.

Using a ruler and pencil make diagonal stripes or any other design you want on your board. Paint. I hot glued the leaves, mum etc just to add something to it.



Since it was the plain board carbon paper worked to copy my words, which I copied from my computer.

I made this one for my grandson, this one is the 12x12 inch size.

Clay Pot Bird Bath

I wanted to add a bird bath to my front flower bed. I also wanted it to be unique, colorful and
one of a kind. This is simple and could be done by all ages. I will be posting this to Thrifty Thursday

I used paint for the outdoors, it can be bought at Hobby Lobby and Wal Mart. Buy or reuse three clay pots, if you are using used ones, wash and let dry. The bird bath can be as tall or short as you want. Make sure that the pots stack on top of each other.  You also need a clay pot tray for the top. Paint as desire, let your imagination be your guide. Paint each pot separately. It will take a couple of coats of paint to cover your pots, let dry between coats.

I measured where my top pot should be glued and used gorilla glue.

I weighted it down and let it dry for several hours. Taking the pots outside  I sprayed each section twice with Krylon indoor/outdoor clear statin spray.

Ceiling Medallion

My daughter and I bought a ceiling medallion similar to this one for very little at a garage sale.
Not knowing what we would do with them we each bought one.

This is what I decided to do with mine. Using Apple Barrel paints, I painted it red, then used a brown watered down I  did a wash over it all. I then came back with gold and painted all the circles. I bought a round mirror at Hobby Lobby (using the 40% off coupon from the newspaper) and hot glued it on.




I have only $2-$3 in it total. I have it on our piano and really like how it turned out.
If  I get tired of the color I can simply repaint it.
I plan on using it with my Christmas decorations this year on our mantel.
